Florian Wirtz is a gem for Germany. He is likely to become a new Liverpool player very soon, so leading British media outlet Sky Sports did not miss the opportunity to analyze the player.
"Florian Wirtz is on a completely different level," says Marco Neppe in an interview with Sky Sports.
The former technical director of Bayern Munich is a long-time fan.
At 22, the Bayer Leverkusen player is already among the best players in the world. He was the team's main driving force in the final third last season. His actions were one of the main factors in ending Bayern's 11-year dominance in the league. What's more, Bayer remained unbeaten in the Bundesliga.
This season, his performance has been even better. In addition to scoring in double figures, he also has the most assists per game, with 12. Wirtz has the most dribbles in Germany. It is this ability to overtake opponents without losing speed that sets him apart from the rest.
"It's the combination. His willingness. He's so brave. His skill set is dangerous for any opponent. He can change the course of a game just by having an idea that no one expects, and suddenly everything changes. He's a game changer," explains Neppe.
Wirtz does this often. He started this season with a 100th-minute winner against Gladbach on the opening day of the season, before scoring twice and providing another assist in the return leg. He scored once and provided three assists in the second half against Freiburg in December. Freiburg were the victims of perhaps his best goal to date, a stunning solo goal in October 2023. A natural right-footer, he scored with his left, and it is impressive how comfortable Wirtz is with both feet in tight situations.
Although the 2023/24 Bundesliga season belongs to him, as he won the tournament's Player of the Year award, it was a season of maturation for Wirz in the Champions League, where he scored six goals in just nine European games.
