As part of the first round of the 2026 World Cup qualifying round, the Armenian national team, led by Yeghishe Melikyan, hosted one of the strongest European teams, Roberto Martinez's Portugal, the winner of the recently concluded Nations League.
The Portuguese have won three times by a large margin: twice against Liechtenstein and once against Kuwait. All matches ended with a score of 8:0. The matches took place consecutively in 1994, 1999 and 2003. The heaviest defeat was recorded in 1947 with a score of 0:10.
About 14,000 spectators and of course the 12th team of our team, who came to the stadium with surprises for the boys, watched the match from the "Republican" stadium. The newly appointed head coach, Yeghishe Melikyan, thanked the Red Eagles and FAF at the post-match press conference for their unwavering dedication and for being with their team until the last minute.
The goals of the match were scored by Joao Felix (double), Cristiano Ronaldo (double) and Joao Cancelo. The Ireland-Hungary match in Group F of the 2026 World Cup ended in a draw (2:2).
Let us remind you that in the second round, Yeghishe Melikyan's men will face the Irish team at home on September 9 at 8:00 PM.
